This Week: Spaceface, Swear Tapes, & The Old Paints
They’re back! The full-sensory overload that is Spaceface returns to Birmingham this weekend. The Memphis-based pysch rock act put on quite a show when they rolled through earlier this summer, complete with a wall of lights, lasers, creatures in the crowd, and a big ol’ parachute. All this going on as the band takes their listeners on a mind-expanding sonic trip. They’re bringing all their sound and color to Syndicate Lounge this Saturday night.
Joining Spaceface are the garage pop rockers Swear Tapes. The Oxford, MS outfit blends hints of Strokes, Ramones, and the like with a dose of pervious endeavors, namely Young Buffalo. From the chiming-clear intro to the wandering vocal fadeout, the first of the band’s new material, “Blasé Blasé,” recalls The Beatles’ dreamier moments. “Song for Lois” demonstrates some exciting guitar work as well as the bands’ ability to run amok with swelling reverb and echo without bogging down the sound.
Beyond their summer gigs with Spaceface, Swear Tapes are preparing to record a collection of their new songs back home. “The Oxford music scene is in a constant state of flux,” says guitarist and former Young Buffalo Jim Barrett. “Lots of people come and go because it’s a college town. Tons of cool new music though so it’s fun. Some great bands around now are Bonus, Nadir Bliss, and Starman Jr. Check ‘em out!”
The Old Paints round out the night with a set that has expanded to include various permutations of rock & roll, country, folk, and so on.
A portion of this show’s cover will go toward the medical expenses of Alabama musician Ronnie Lee Gipson, who suffered a bullet wound earlier this month. He’s on the road to recovery, and could certainly use your help. You can pitch in right here, too.
The show starts at 7 p.m. The Syndicate Lounge is located at 33 20th St S, Birmingham, Alabama 35233.
