Night owls across the U.S. just caught a glimpse of what Birmingham has to offer. On Friday night, April 25, St. Paul and the Broken Bones appeared on network TV. The fiery soul act appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and showed a nationwide audience what Birmingham already knew: there’s major talent in the Magic City.

Taking the stage after a guest interview with Billy Bob Thornton, St. Paul and the Broken Bones brought their rock and soul to the offbeat late night program with their hit “Call Me.” This comes just after the release of the song’s accompanying music video. The band was as together as ever, and from the looks on their faces, they seemed happy to be there.

The classic horns and tight rhythm section demonstrate incredible talent and professional skill, but if the breakaway group has a definitive X-factor, it has to be frontman Paul Janeway’s Pentecostal delivery. The whole band gives 110% in their performance, and Janeway’s charisma and enthusiasm grab the crowd’s attention from the moment he takes the microphone. Part James Brown, part fire and brimstone, the singer’s fervent howls leave a lasting impression that has helped bolster the band’s popularity in Birmingham and far beyond.

The band’s had a heck of a year so far, with the release of their first LP and a tour that included a stop at SXSW. They’ve taken their high-energy act around the U.S. and are riding high on a wave of momentum. Appearing on CBS was the latest stride by a band that shows no sign of slowing down.

St. Paul has no doubt worked very hard to accomplish all that they have done so far, and have enjoyed the support of their label (Single Lock Records) and hometown scene. As the buzz continues, keep in mind that the scene that gave them their start is also fostering a host of phenomenal musicians. Expect more nationwide ambassadors from Birmingham and the surrounding state very soon.
