With the slogan “helping build your music library one song at a time,” Reg’s Coffee House showcases new music and upcoming songwriters. Hosted by Scott Register, Reg’s Coffee House airs on 107.3 FM every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Voted Birmingham’s best personality four years in a row, Scott Register has been hosting this show since 1997.

Reg’s Coffee House began as a one-hour show on WRAX-FM. Since then, the show has grown to four hours. After being replaced by talk radio in 2010, the show then appeared on the internet with Birmingham Mountain Radio. Since July 2013, the show has returned to radio.

Every week on the show, listeners can hear music from local, regional, and national singer-songwriters. Upcoming bands like The Great Book of John, Lord Huron, and Washed Out all receive airtime on Reg’s Coffee House. Register also plays deeper tracks that are rarely heard on the radio from established artists.

Register finds new music when artists, labels, and management send him CDs. “I get up to 10-30 new CDs a day to listen to. I have about 100-200 CDs compiled onto a hard drive and that’s what I use for the show.”

Reg’s Coffee House reflects Register’s wide range of music tastes. In compiling the songs for the show, Register keeps the listeners in mind. “I try to play songs I think a fifteen and fifty-year-old will like,” Register explains. “You may not like every song I play, but if you are exposed to one artist you’ve never heard before then I’ve done my job.”

Throughout the years, Register has continually found support from the Birmingham area, reflected in his status as best radio personality for the past four years. “There’s no one reason why everyone identifies with my show. It just comes down to the songs,” Register says. “I think part of it is the show is not supposed to sound produced and shiny. There’s no formula for the show. It’s just me and a stack of CDs.”

Reg’s Coffee House music may have a melancholy or upbeat theme depending on Register’s mood. “I just try to create a casual vibe for laid-back Sunday mornings to hangout, drink some coffee and listen to good music,” Register explains. “There have been many changes with me and my programming, but the overall vibe has always stayed same and remains focused on singer-songwriters and alternative music.”

Register continues to invest his time and effort into the local music scene of Birmingham through support and events. “Birmingham has so much going for it. We get artists from all over the world that come by and are just amazed by the city,” Register says. “I want to help Birmingham reach its potential because nothing is worse than wasted potential.”
