On Saturday, June 14, Birmingham Mountain Radio will host the 3rd annual Southbound Music Festival at Avondale Brewing Company!

In two years, The Southbound Festival has proven to be a great success and a grand time, exposing Magic City music lovers to some incredible talent. Organized by Southbound Radio hosts David and Michael Seale, the festival pulled in 600 attendees in its first year and 900 in the second. The music drew an impressive crowd to Avondale Brewing’s backyard, and stands to do the same again this year.

The Seale brothers’ BMR show, Southbound, is dedicated to sharing local talent with the city. They’ve given many deserving musicians airtime and exposure, and the festival is a huge extension of their efforts. “I know that Birmingham Mountain Radio’s move to FM in early July 2013 helped,” says David Seale, “And of course, Jeff Clanton, BMR station manager, has done so much to support what we do.”

The strong turnouts also suggest a healthy interest in the local scene. “I think it says that Birmingham not only supports its artists, but that there is a growing appreciation of original music, as well as variety,” says Seale. The festival continues to represent the wide variety of music hear in Birmingham, including rock, hip-hop, soul, folk, and everything in between.

“Festival-goers come for maybe one or two acts they know but stay and discover several others they did not know until that day,” says Seale. “That kind of open-mindedness has to exist if a scene is to flourish.”

Variety is the theme of this festival, and the entire day offers opportunity for discovery. “We want to give exposure to different artists each summer,” says Seale. “We want variety, so we made sure we had diversity amongst our choices- we always have so much from which to choose.”
