Pickin’ in the Park 2017

Tune your guitar, rosin up your bow, and join in the music-making this Sunday at Homewood Central Park. Homewood Music and the Homewood Arts Council are hosting the fourth annual Pickin’ in the Park, an open jam for musicians of all skills and fortes. Come pick, strum, and sing to your heart’s content.

There will be tents and pavilions open around the park, inviting guests to jam with friends or play along with fellow music lovers. This event is the perfect opportunity for hobbyists and aspiring musicians, and old pros to step into a jam in-progress or initiate the next song.

If you’re a fiddle player, you’ll feel right at home. Do you love picking lead guitar? Here’s your chance to trade fours with other instrumentalists. Got a banjo, mandolin, or bouzouki? Bring that too.

The main stage will feature professional performances throughout the day. This year’s guest musicians include Gabriel Akins of The Matchcoats, Foggy Hollow Review, Anthony Dean Sutton, and more.

This year, the event will also feature a handmade art show, with craft goods by local artists. Venders will bring their jewelry, potter, honey, and more. “It’s two festivals in one,” says Homewood Music’s Bob Tedrow. If the music-making stirs up an appetite, guests may sate their hunger with the event’s food trucks in-residence.

In previous years, hundreds of musicians have filled the park with acoustic folk, blues, and all manner of modern, classic, and old-timey tunes. “The crowds have been great, and we’re expecting great weather for the festival this year,” says Tedrow. “It’ll be a good afternoon of peace, love, and music.”

Pickin’ in the Park runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Homewood Central Park is located at 1632 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama 35209.
