Cold Cold Sweats and The Deep End at Avondale Brewing Co. (July 13)
This Saturday, Florence rock act Cold Cold Sweats will perform at Avondale Brewing Company with Birmingham hip-hop group The Deep End.
Riding in from the Shoals come Cold Cold Sweats, who bring a dynamic display of modern acoustic jam and electric thrill. The band has an inherent air of coolness, translated through mid-tempo ska chops, acoustic-only breaks, and smooth trill riffs. The single coil intro of “Whisper” is a sweet attention grabber, and the lyric-centric “Willow Tree” aches with conviction. They can turn on a dime, though- When the full band kicks in with distorted/clean strings and percussion, ambiance gives way to a hot and heavy rock concert. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and the audience at their shows can always anticipate an energetic performance. Cold Cold Sweats is a prime example of the musical resurgence happening in the Shoals.
A reincarnation of Birmingham’s Jive Mob, The Deep End combines old school hip hop with funk and reggae. Carlito Jackson can deliver lyrics at a mile-a-minute, and demonstrates some vocal endurance on tracks like “Over the Edge.” The background vocals add layers of depth and harmony, and the instrumentation reaches far beyond standard hip-hop fare. The entire crew brings talent and creativity to the table, with groovy bass and some very cool wah-guitar accompaniment. There’s a deeply thought-provoking side as well, like the soberingly sincere “They Don’t Know.” As a mix of old and new, The Deep End shows how Birmingham hip-hop has evolved over recent years. As an entirely separate project, they’re a team of seasoned musicians who have developed a unique take on the genre.
The show starts around 7 p.m. This gig is brought to you by Little Town Sound.
